GROUND STAFF TRAINING
Ground staff and flight crews are Alitalia’s front line. They are the image of the Company in the eyes of customers and the lynchpin around which all its activities revolve. Recruitment, selection and operational training of personnel who assist passengers and aircraft are carried out by Alitalia Airport. The aim is to ensure that all the ground staff who wear the Company uniform are technically trained and have the same standards of behaviour.

Training activities take place at the “Zamberletti”Front Line Training Centre located at Fiumicino airport. The two training courses focus on different but complementary occupations – inside the airport and on the runway.

The basic course for airport staff focuses on all the activities involved in check in, boarding and assisting passengers at airports, dealing not only with technical training but also with safety and security regulations at airports, as well as standards of behaviour and how to handle relations with customers. The course is divided into three weeks of classroom work and two weeks of on-the-job training, working alongside an experienced staff member, in order to put into practice the knowledge acquired in the classroom in real work surroundings. There are also more advanced courses for Lost & Found staff and ticketing clerks.

The course for airport operators (OUA) provides training for all the personnel who deal with loading and unloading aircraft, onboard cleaning, and some of the mechanical equipment in airports (e.g. baggage conveyor belts) as well as driving vehicles to move passengers, goods, and aircraft. The basic course for newcomers involves eight days in the classroom and five days working alongside experienced staff on the runway, under the supervision of instructors. Candidates then have to take a Ministry of Transport exam (DCA) in order to get their airport licence and to be able to drive vehicles on the runway. There are also more advanced courses for ramp operations and centring aircraft.

The “Zamberletti” Front Line Training Centre also holds regular refresher courses for ground staff, dealing with procedures for individual airlines and with local and international safety and security regulations at airports.
