Rome, 29 March 2016 – Alitalia is supporting Rome and Italy in the bid to host the Olympic Games in 2024. As Italy’s largest airline and a key player in efforts to develop the country’s tourism industry, the Company confirms its commitment to supporting major international events held in the country, as it did on the occasion of the Rome Olympics of 1960, the 1990 Football World Cup, the 2000 Jubilee and Expo2015 in Milan. As a long-standing promoter of sporting values, Alitalia accepted the challenge launched by Coni (the Italian Olympic Committee) to host the 2024 Olympic Games in the Italian capital. As a result, the airline has chosen to be the Top Sponsor, believing that the most difficult challenges can only be met if the country presents a united front, just like an Olympic team. Roma2024 will see Alitalia strengthen its ties with its home country (where it serves 27 airports): the programme presented by the Olympic Committee envisages that the games will take place in various Italian cities and regions.
The Rome Olympics will be an occasion to celebrate the beauty of Italy’s cultural and natural heritage, which will provide the backdrop for a number of the most important events, such as the beach volley tournament to be hosted in Rome’s Circo Massimo, the cycle races that are due to finish in the midst of the Imperial Forum, and the archery tournament to be held within an archaeological site. Finally, the finish line for the Games’ most iconic event, the Marathon, will be located close to the Arch of Constantine, where the runners will arrive after having passed the places of worship used by the three principal religions: Saint Peter’s, the Synagogue and the Mosque of Rome. A symbol of dialogue and hope for all.
The last Olympics saw more than 2 million sports fans descend on London, spending over €1.5 billion and giving a major boost to tourism in the two years following the event. Sponsorship of the Olympic Committee forms part of our “Alitalia per lo Sport” project, which aims to promote sporting values and the culture of sport, as envisaged in the agreement between Alitalia and Coni, which has already seen the airline sponsor Rome’s International Tennis Tournament last year, a commitment confirmed for 2016. Alitalia will support the Olympic bid with a campaign entitled “Prossima destinazione Roma2024” and will make all its communication channels available to the Committee: inflight (magazines and announcements), on the ground (lounges) and digital (the website and social media).
