MAINTENANCE
The wide range of maintenance activities that Alitalia Servizi carries out for Alitalia and other airlines involves around 3,800 people. Maintenance not only concerns the technical and mechanical parts of aircraft – engines, navigation systems, landing gear, etc – but also the interior, the cabin and accessories as well as onboard entertainment services and systems. Servicing is carried out at regular intervals and varies according to the type of aircraft, the way it is used and the various elements which it is made up of. For instance, planes are inspected before and after every flight. Servicing operations carried out at regular intervals, or after a certain number of flying hours, range from daily inspections up to the full Check D which lasts about a month and involves dismantling the plane piece by piece and reassembling it. Finally, there are unscheduled actions “on demand” which are carried out whenever anomalies or faults arise.
The heart of aircraft maintenance activities is at the “Città del Volo” (Flight City) Fiumicino – an area of about 700,000 square metres equipped with seven hangars, forty workshops, several warehouses and a training centre. The workforce consists of around 2,550 people specialised in dealing with large aircraft such as B777s, B767s and MD11s (see the fleet). Two companies work closely together within the business unit: Alitalia Maintenance Systems and Atitech.
Alitalia Maintenance Systemsdeals with the complex operations of engine maintenance and servicing for the Alitalia fleet and for other airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France, Cathay Pacific and Air One. The AMS headquarters is located at Fiumicino airport in a specially designed building equipped with state-of-the-art plant and equipment. More than 400 skilled technicians carry out maintenance operations on about 60 engines and 140 Auxiliary Power Units (APU) every year.
Atitech is a company specialising in maintenance and servicing operations for small and medium-size narrow-body aircraft ranging from MD80s and 90s to the Airbus 319, 320 and 321. The company has about 800 employees and the main plant is located close to Naples Capodichino airport. The main customer is Alitalia, but several other companies rely on Atitech’s skilled technicians to service their planes. Atitech has its own training centre which also runs regular upgrading and refresher courses for technicians.
